The Dunedin Dental School is undergoing a fire protection upgrade by way of installation of a new Fire Sprinkler system. This investment is part of University Fire Protection strategy to ensure their key buildings are afforded the best level of fire protection. While a fire of serious proportions may be an unlikely event, the consequence on that academic year would be intolerable. This building is fitted with teaching laboratories that contain specialist equipment and services. This could not easily be replicated in a very short time following a fire.
Fire Protection Engineers fully designed the Fire Sprinkler system prior to tender. This is contrary to the usual design and build methods as it was considered very important to understand precisely how installing such a system would impact on the building occupants given that the building is to remain fully functional and occupied throughout the installation period.
